About to get back into his car he saw a young couple arguing. When the man smashed a bottle across the girl's face, Marentette tried to intervene to prevent him from attacking her further. After a brief struggle the man ran back to his car, having fractured Marentette's jaw.
"I could see him wipe his bloodied suit sleeve across his face as he spun around and accelerated. I tried to move out of the range of the approaching vehicle though I was feeling quite faint. Before my knees hit the ground I was struck by the car. I remember losing my breath suddenly and then my right cheek was forced into the hood of the car, just slightly above the front grill. Airborne and helpless, my limbs bounced mercilessly upon the pavement. It seemed that a frightful silence had seized the night about me. Verging on unconsciousness, I heard the roar of the engine and recognized the sound of the car winding into reverse. Vaguely, I remember turning my head to the left as the rear tires pressed upon and over my chest."
During the next four days, while the body of Wayne Marentette lay comatose in hospital in London, Ontario, Marentette himself - his sentient being, his soul, call it what you will - embarked on a spiritual initiation which was to dramatically transform his life when he finally emerged from the coma.
